Open sourcing the code is outside of my authority, as I do not own it. I honestly don't know if Professor owns it or merely controls some entity that does, but I admit that this confusion has made it quite difficult over the years to do anything about it. I can't afford to buy it at the price Prof paid for it, and he doesn't seem to feel that the valuation has decreased very much.

I think that this discussion strikes right at the heart of why I have a hard time working on SL. I do not own it, I do not control it, and I cannot afford it. Any work that I put into it could go away at a moment with my efforts left useless. I cannot rewrite for the same reasons. Worse, assuming I gave a herculean effort and became the next Zygna, I would have done it for free. Call it the tenant's dilemma if you will. (You don't own the place, expensive fixes to it are free and only benefit the landlord, who is then motivated to charge higher rent since the property value has increased. So you do enough to get by). Were I to create another SL with a different name I would still not own it, due to my exposure to the code. Any judge would rule that I copied the game, any copy belonging to the original copyright holder and not myself.

I have not been strong enough to admit this until ... around now, even to myself. I have instead tried to not think about it much. However, DAngel has made a concerted effort these past few days to communicate with me (I saw four pings, and when I looked I found another which didn't reach me - I suspect that there are several more), and that kind of effort demands that I respond or spit in the eye of my younger self who made strong promises to himself on behalf of whomever made such an effort.

Thank you for the explanation. That makes a lot of sense, and we appreciate your efforts and your honesty. Also, thanks for fixing the clan forum thread issue - I assume that's what the "test clan" was all about.

So Prof basically agreed on my idea. Iiri is looking into ways now on how we can manage this going forward.

Progress on this may be a little slow though as I understand Iiri has other RL things he has to do, havn't herd from him for about 3 weeks now, but progress is progress right?

So unfortunately I havn't heard anything else regarding this for a while. The last I spoke to Iiri he was going to get it all on a repo where we could help out and try and refine the process of getting new versions of the site online (you know new things that we change and a way of pushing them to the server).

Iiri any word on this yet? Let me know
