I detected an SP planet using my near scanners, however when I went to investigate there was nothing there...
I double checked the coordinates and it couldn't have anything to do with the newbie arena because they're SP planets. Is this a bug or did I miss something?

It occasionly happens, a bug tbh.
Just wait a few days and the planets should appear.

I will bet that it is a new player bug.
I lost a spy ship before I came out of the training program, when someone found a system that I had a planet in.
They found my ship, but not my planet.
