build as many as you can, i can tell you attackers will use a lot of untrained fighters to kill them all

well, if 2 fighters can take out one turret, means turrets cost more than fighters to destroy them, so thay are really too weak for their price. Having in mind that defender should loose less than attacker, it should be something like 5 fighters for one turret.
Now all turrets can do is to save you several minutes, which, if you are online is enough for prepare to defend the planet.
