Is it possible to repair ships? And how does combat system work... Do ships loose volume or attack points? Or defence?

And how about those points. If I get attacked by a ship and I've got 5000 defence, so my ship automatically use defence points against enemy ship? Or maybe defence points are only used for defending against attack without damaging enemy ship and my ship automaticcally attacks using his attack points? Pleae explain me.
